According to Mainichi, Sanrio is set to add another character to it’s already bulging portfolio.
The new characters are a pair of female friends who live in a forrest, called CherinaCherine. I might be wrong, but wouldn’t that be hard to pronounce even for Japanese people? Looking at that i would say it was pronounced che-ree-nah-che-ree-neh, which is a long word by Japanese standards, given that they shorten every word possible.
So my thoughts are that even if Sanrio makes a character with a long name like this, sooner or later, the primary school kids which are the target of this campaign will be shortening the name into something like cheri or cherina. I would have thought the name would be better as CheriCheri or something cute like that. CherinaCherine is just weird. And too long for my tongue to get around! Don’t want to say that when you’re drunk! Though why you would be talking about those characters when you’re drunk is another thing… ;o)

Bizarre…then again, my Japanese parents named me Michelle…and NO one could pronounce it! haha…
